Hume Scholars

The Hume Scholars program is a scholarship and fellowship program for students involved in the National Security Education Program (NSEP). The Hume Center's NSEP offers an annual scholarship and fellowship program for students interested in careers in the national security sector, both in industry and government service.

The following classes of scholarships and fellowships are available:

  • $4,000/year undergraduate scholarship
  • $4,000 undergraduate scholarship (see Mark Kusiak Scholar requirements)
  • $3,000/year graduate fellowship
  • $1,500 scholarship open to undergraduate or graduate students

Student Requirements

Key requirements for applicants are as follows:

  • Must be a current student of Virginia Tech.
  • Must be a United States Citizen.
  • Have a 3.0 grade point average or higher.
    • For the Kusiak scholarship, be a CS or ECE undergraduate with a minimum 3.5 GPA.
  • Must be interested in a career in intelligence, defense, or national security.

Selected students are required to:

  • participate in and meet all requirements of the IC CAE program;
  • maintain specific minimum GPA requirements (above 3.0);
  • undergraduate students are required to work in a multi-disciplinary team on an assigned research project OR identify a focused area of independent student research related to the IC or National Security;
  • graduate students are required to select a thesis or dissertation topic with applications to National Security;
  • develop and present a research poster at the Hume Center Colloquium, and present an oral presentation at the Hume Center Colloquium, if requested.

Note that the Mark Kusiak Scholar requirements differ somewhat from the above.

We encourage applications from students majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) subjects, but any major is eligible for the scholarships. We seek a diverse pool of applicants. Students with a financial need based on the results of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) are encouraged to apply and will be given preference in the review process.
